Action Shot

I don't think I've ever posted a shot of me "in action". This was taken by a professional photographer and I wish I could link to him but I have no idea what his name is or how to find it! If that person is ever stumbling across this, by all means drop me a line and I will be more than happy to link to you!

Two things I hate: My glasses and my mouth guard! As a referee I am not required by my insurance carrier to wear one, but I sometimes do anyway if the bout seems a little rough and I think I may get leveled. I always, always wear one at practice because I train with the girls so I do the same things they do. That means that a mouth guard is a definite necessity to protect both my vanity and my chance of getting a concussion from slamming my teeth together. A little glimpse into what goes on in my world.

Team Spirit

The fact that I didn't smile in this photo does not mean that I was not excited at all in this picture. I was so proud of my girls and the job they did on the track that I just wanted to wear my roller derby shirt the next day. I don't get to wear my team shirt during games because I'm a referee and I need to a) wear stripes and b) be impartial. So I'm not smiling but my eyes are saying "Go Limestone CrusHers!"

Shirt: Uniform

tweed Shorts: Joe

Shoes: Iron Fist "Dia de los Muertos"

Bracelet: Zellers

Hair elastic: Goody. Just to sex up the photo. Rofl!

I have since taken my shirt and DIY'ed it. Meaning, I cut off the sleeves and the bottom hem and scrunched the shoulders and tied them with little bows. I will show you all at a later date. Also note: I want to squeal with glee whenever I see my own name and number on my shirt! The only problem is that when people read it I have to tell them "Rhymes with Coca-cola" and they still don't get it. So I just say, "Call me Chola" and it all works out, but I didn't foresee the mispronunciation in advance!

Pleather Weather

It was pleather weather when I got dressed on this day, but not as the day wore on. I wore this to take a two hour (which turned into three hour) bus ride with my roller derby team to compete in another city. By the time we got there, the weather had changed and I thought I might sweat to death in what is essentially a plastic shirt and giant jeans!

Moto: Old Navy

Pleather tank: Winners

Boyfriend Jeans: Aeropostale

Shoes: Walmart

Tights which were peeking out by accident: Hue

Boyfriend jeans are unflattering and basically man-repellant but why do they have to be so comfortable? For seven dollars I took a chance on them but I think I'm going to be cutting them into shorts for such purposes as lawn-mowing and car-washing. They're one of those items that I loathed when I first saw them but then they started to grow on me. I stand firm on my original thought though: loathe entirely!

I've Got the Blues

I've been crazy-busy for the past two months. Literally, I've been going crazy and have barely been able to breathe! I'm looking forward to school being out so I can have the kids to myself, since all of their extra-curriculars will end as well. That feeling will probably last... oh, about 3 days before I'm ready to tear out my hair. Still, it will be nice to get to spend a weekend at home again sometime soon!

This was supposed to be my last outfit for Fruits Week, I went with blueberry. I just had to wear it again after that whole virus-fiasco wiped my hard drive. So you haven't seen it, but it is a repeat. It was very breezy when the weather was hella hot like it's been.

Shirt: Old Navy

Shorts: Stitches

Shoes: Old Navy

Bracelet: Child gifted and the blue gator one is thrifted

I'm still feeling weird about letting people see me in shorts. I would normally only wear these to the beach or for bumming around the yard or something but being in roller derby has made me embrace wearing shorts that are closer to being considered panties with a zipper than I normally would have been. That, and did I mention that it's hot?

Rainbow Brights

Sometimes when it's a rainy day, I just have to go all crazy with the colours so that I don't get meloncholy. I snapped this on my Blackberry while at my son's soccer game, and it goes without saying that I was the flashiest mom there. My ten year old said that he could see me from down the street and he knew it would be his mom because "The other moms dress boring". Kid approved?

Raincoat and boots: George

Shorts: Joe

Tights: Sourpuss

Umbrella: It's a long story, but finders keepers!

What do you do when the weather is terrible? Blend it or fight it? How many years do you think I have before the ten year old is embarrassed to be seen with me like this?

Skulls and Bones and Pretty Things

I bought this skull watch a few years ago. It was one of my first Etsy purchases and it was from a shop called Funky Laura. I've since fallen more in love with Etsy every day and I believe it's very important to support handmade whenever I can, but this still remains my favourite item. I wear it even though I haven't bothered to change the watch battery!

The best part is that I think it only cost me about ten dollars. What is your favourite Etsy find?

Neutrality and Nakedness!

Behold! Pretty dresses!

I've always considered this colour a non-colour. The terms "nude" or "blush" or "flesh", I take issue with because that implies that all people are this colour which is entirely false. I'll just call it "neutral" for now.

My "best friend forever", or since the very early nineties, is getting married in about two weeks. I've been procrastinating on the dress-thing! Usually I don't have trouble deciding what to wear but this time I've just hit a blank. I've never tried this colour but I think I'm going to for this occasion and I want to see how it looks with my tanned skin. It's not a fancy wedding, she's getting married at city hall and having a reception at a vegan restaurant so I don't have to go all out with the fanciness and the bling and all that.

So I know what colour stream I'm shopping for, I just don't know what shape I want to go for. Perhaps I'll go all in for the caftan to disguise the fact that I had to hit a burger joint on the way to the reception? Totally kidding. (Maybe. I do love my meat!) I'm going shopping today so hopefully I have luck and if I don't come back with something that I had in mind, at least I hope I will have something and I won't have to show up naked. Now that would be embarrassing!

A Thing For Hats

I've just come off of a crazy-busy weekend of roller derby and driving for hours and hours to be able to do that. It's Tuesday but I'm still worn out! I will perhaps have pictures later, depending on whether or not the photographers snapped me! I'll know once they upload them and will hopefully be able to share! We had a lot of injuries on Sunday night, but thankfully since I'm a ref, I didn't end up breaking my ass like my unfortunate derby sister who is on her second ass break right now! Ouch! In other news, I have no idea when I wore this but it says May in my Flickr and it's the only one I haven't blogged yet that's been kicking around in my account. My camera is full again after the unfortunate hard drive loss, so I'll just have to repeat the outfits that I've missed if I can remember them.

Hat, Socks: Ardene

Shirt: Joe

Skirt, Tights: Old Navy

Boots: Walmart

Bracelet: Zellers

Watch: Etsy

There is something about hats. I am a sucker for hats! Not baseball caps, baseball caps can go jump off a bridge for all I care, but real honest-to-goodness hats I am IN LOVE! They're also quite good for disguising my helmet hair after I leave derby practice! Win-win!

Reffin' Up

This is a profile picture I had taken for our roller derby league's website. We were instructed by the photographer to make mean faces, and I am famous for my snarl. Just ask my ex! Just kidding. (But only sort of!) The good thing about having a blog like this is that I was not nervous at all to be photographed and to get my shots finished it took about 2 minutes total, whereas a lot of the girls were nervous and felt awkward so it took them a little longer to warm up. The photographer was amazing and was a really fun guy, which helped a lot. We all had so much fun! Then we went to practice afterward and sweat all of our makeup off like good little derby girls!

Shirt: part of my uniform

Shorts: Joe

Fishnets: Old Navy

Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell Lita

A lot of people were asking me where I got my shoes, and I was glad to have the photographer feature them prominently when he photoshopped this to play with the light, etc. Jeffrey Campbell makes a great monster platform!

Hair Storm Warning

What a week I've been having! Instead of focusing on the negative, I'll focus on the positive! We've had a crazy weather-week with tornadoes and lightning storms and still over 6000 people in the surrounding area without power. (This village only has a population of 1800 so you can get a grasp on the magnitude!) I'm thankful that we only lost one tree, and that it didn't fall on the house. I'm thankful that our electricity was restored quite promptly compared to many people. I'm thankful that we managed to cook and live a relatively normal life in the midst of semi-chaos, and most of all I'm thankful that the we had baby tornadoes and not the giant scary ones that carry entire houses away with them. Also, having ice cream for dinner on day one was just all kinds of awesome, plus all of the extra kid-time spent huddling around candles without electronic distractions was the biggest bonus.

Also awesome, this storm-inspired hair. I want to do this, just once!

That is some amazing tornado hair!

Watermelon Version 1.0

This was my original version of my watermelon-themed outfit from Fruits Week. It's just been languishing in my Flikr account for a while, but you can never have too much watermelon.

Tank: Mommed

Skirt: Gap, thrifted and shortened

Trouser socks: Payless

Boots: Rocket Dog

Purse: Payless

I like to think that I look cute in these pictures (lol) but in reality I hate this skirt because it's cut in a way that tends to look gunty when I have extra weight on like right now. Also, my boots are annoying because the soles are made of foam so they're always leaving black stuff everywhere I walk in them. I'm thinking that maybe I'll take them to some shoe repair shop and get them lined with rubber or something. Or I'll glue tires on the bottoms. Kidding. (sort of) I really like them so I'm not ready to give them up just yet!

The Things You Do For Love

My boyfriend gave me a virus last week. Okay, so not really my boyfriend (only in my dreams) and not really me, but my laptop. I was on one of those "Watch Live TV" websites to watch the French Open and I contracted a virus that wiped out all of my files and programs from my hard drive. It'll take me a while now to be able to post photos, since my last day of Fruits Week and all of the other pictures I had of other outfits are now gone. To help me cope, let us drool over pictures of my boyfriend, Rafael Nadal, with no shirt. Congratulations, mi amorcito. Te quiero un chingo. ;)

Fruits Week Day 5: Kiwi

When I wore this, mother nature had decided to give us a break from the oppressive, lethargy-inducing heat and make the day cold and windy. It was nice to get to wear a sweater again for one day, but I don't want to make a habit of it this summer.

Brown velvet shoes=kiwi skin!

Hat: Old Navy

Sweater: Thrifted

Shirt: Daddy but then D.I.Y.

Belt: Daddy

Boyfriend Jeans: Not Daddy. Aeropostale

Shoes: Betsey Johnson

I always said I'd never do boyfriend jeans, but here I am. Can you blame me if I paid for them with change? Coins! I thought I'd try them at that price but I must say, they are not a man-approved item by any means. Speaking of, in Feng Shui, wearing a green hat means that you've been cuckolded. I decided to buy it anyway because it's linen and I have an all consuming passion for linen in the summer even though it wrinkles like crazy. Plus, there's no one to cuckold me so the universe and I are good for now.

Fruits Week Day 4: Banana

It's hard for me to look at myself and think "banana" without screaming "EGG!" in my head. Banana is not my favourite! It reminds me of having to take antibiotics when I was a kid. Banana bread, however, makes up for all that. I'm pretty sure that banana bread was sent from heaven.

Yellow Halter: Old Navy

White Skirt: Old Navy

Gladiators: American Eagle for Payless

Necklace: Gift from the six year old

Bracelets: Randomness

Nail Polish: Sally Hansen Insta-Dry

This nail polish is totally grossing me out. I bought it on purpose for banana day, and it took four coats to cover and it just looks... like mashed banana! Not fun. I have one colour from this brand that I love, and two others that I hate. I don't know how the "Sonic Bloom" colour can go on so nicely and give great coverage, when this yellow was so horrible and the red that I have gives no coverage and is impossible to take off. The last time I got a pedicure I was wearing the red and the man who was taking the polish off got it all over his hands and I'm sure he used up his cotton ball quota for the day, poor soul! I was meant to be talking about fruit... Anyway, moral of the story is: You get what you pay for. Cheap nail polish is always going to just be cheap nail polish! I'm sticking with the brands I can count on, like Essie and O.P.I., just to name two. End rant.

Fruits Week Day 3: Grape

Apparently I have no smiles for you today. Perhaps it's because it's about one million degrees and you're going to be seeing me with this permanent curly mophead all summer long. Even with a flat iron and my Elnet shield... this is what I get in this humidity. Did I mention how it's one million degrees?

Belt: Joe

Necklace and watch: Etsy

Everything else: Old Navy

Perhaps I'm stricken because I keep meaning to take the drawstring out of this blasted shirt and right here it looks like some sort of strange crotch-bow? :P I know I keep trying to stay out of Old Navy, but really, these shoes and shirt were two dollars each and my linen shorts were ten so that's how I justify it. Very grape-y!
